Biography

Merril D. Smith (she/her) is a Pushcart and Best of the Net nominated poet and writer. Her first full-length poetry collection, River Ghosts, was published by Nightingale & Sparrow Press in 2022. It was Black Bough Poetry’s Book of the Month in December 2022. Her most recent poetry collection is Held Inside the Folds of Time (Jane’s Studio Press), published in 2025. Her poetry has been published in journals and anthologies including The Storms, Feral, Black Bough, Acropolis, Gleam, Tiny Wren Lit, and others. 

Merril D. Smith holds a Ph.D. in American history. She is the author and editor of many scholarly books including Breaking the Bonds: Marital Discord in Pennsylvania, 1730-1830, Sex Without Consent, the Encyclopedia of Rape, the Encyclopedia of Rape and Sexual Violence (2018) the History of American Cooking, the Cultural Encyclopedia of the Breast, and the World of the American Revolution: A Daily Life Encyclopediam and Sexual Harassment: A Reference Handbook, published in 2020.  Merril D. Smith lives in New Jersey, where she often walks by the Delaware River.
